How did I not know the new Mokes were a thing? Anyone know whether the gas version is street legal? (Seems safe to assume not, but...)

The only way it’s possible is if the gas version is a kit car.
The electric version is a FMVSS 500 Low Speed Vehicle, so it’ll be legal.

They have a bunch on Nantucket, and they’re slow as shit. They look very cheaply made. They’re classified as a low speed vehicle, which earns you a special plate. My Land Rover that has 63 hp is faster than those. I think their only market will be for vacation homes without highways.

There’s an irritating aspect to this, the paradox of the obsolete predecessor. The original Moke was more or less the perfect original multipurpose cart in a world without good multipurpose carts. In a world swamped with dozens of kinds of carts, is there still any great need to stick with the Moke? Similarly, Steyr made the Haflinger, a tiny side-by-side 4WD vehicle which is now completely redundant to a SXS... so other than novelty there’s not a whole lot of reason to have one except that it’s classic.
And yet, because those other things are in demand, you take the price for those and add a classic premium. So, somebody who might want one for novelty
but doesn’t “need” one enough to be in the normal market will never afford one.

Beachify by adding larger wheels, taller suspension, etc.? In other words, you want to see a sedan Mini with California Moke upgrades?

The gas version will go 68mph? OMFG! I’d love to have one, but again the cost for something that is essentially a toy is too much. My neighborhood allows golf carts and some low speed vehicles but the regulations are odd. Its easier just to drive a car.

I agree they went from shocking adoption by the elite resort community to lookatme meeting modern emissions and a retro-vibe at futuristic levels of inflation price point.

There’s a new high rise opening up in my home town, and they have these for I guess people who own condos in it to use. Growing up in a beach area , I’ve seen my fair share of original Mokes; in Cape May, Manasquan, Spring Lake. Basically any beach town with preppy white people has at least one. I gotta day, I immediately knew the new one wasn’t original. In person it LOOKS like a cheap knockoff. I’d love an original one, but they can keep their knockoff new ones.

I love this comment:
Give it a third headlight to look like the fish that lived too close to the nuclear plant and tow it with a Homer van with Mr.Sparkle painted on the sides.
